Stay Safe on the Web
With the internet becoming all the more vast and inviting, many have used the internet as a means in order to better their own life in some way. However, many internet users are completely unaware of the type of people out there who use the internet as a tool to commit crime and invade your home so it is always important to know how to keep safe when using the internet.
Parental Control:
This is a very important aspect which you must consider if you have children that use your computer on a regular basis to just surf the web for fun or even education. Most computers and even internet browsers have Parental Control options which allow you to choose what kind of sites your children can access and in turn protect them from the dangers that lurk on the internet. However, it is important to still watch what sites your children are accessing as even sites that appear to be no harm can be a lure for children to go on so it is always advised that you ‘guide’ your child when they are on the internet. Alternatively, you can purchase programs which can make sure your child is not accessing any sites (including chat rooms, etc.) and it can monitor their usage giving you peace of mind knowing they are safe when they are on the internet.
Keep good Anti-Virus and Updated:
When surfing the web it is important that no matter who it is that uses the computer has adequate Anti-Virus protection and that your computer and Anti-Virus suite are always updated. If your security is down or out-dated it can leave your PC wide open to security threats and if you feel that there is something funny going on with your computer or you are unsure about your protection then visit your local IT business and they can examine your PC for any possible threats and can advise you on the best way to protect your PC and keep it secure for your internet usage.
Be wary of sites/emails you don’t know:
Always be careful especially when sites or emails ask you to give out personal information because there are many fraud sites out there that will use your information in order to commit fraud and so it is always important that you know the site/person before giving out any information. If you are unsure about anything try researching the site or ask a few people you know about it and that way you can check whether it is valid or not. Also, if you check out your browser and see a lock in the corner of your address bar it is a sign that the site is secure and is more than likely safe to use. When it comes to email the main rule is to only open mail from people you know. If you are unsure of the sender or content of the message then you can ask round and see but if you are completely sure you do not know the sender then you should just delete the email without opening it as many viruses can find their way into your PC through your email.
Conclusion:
It is always important to stay safe and secure when surfing the web and no matter what the user it is essential to be informed of the dangers that lurk on the internet and have an effective way to protect you and your family’s security. If you take this information as a starter guide to keeping safe on the web then you can insure a more safer and risk-free way of using the internet.
