Steve Jobs Steps Down as CEO
On Wednesday 24th August, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs’ resignation became the hot topic and trending subject on various news sites and Twitter Feeds. The news came via an official press release from Apple stating that, “Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.” It did not take long for the public to start making comment on what many have claimed to be the biggest change to Apple since the company was first set up in 1977. The majority of the public were shocked to hear the news of Jobs’ decision to leave the company and many took to Twitter to wish Jobs all the best as many took his ill-health to be one of the reasons for his departure.
Tim Cook was announced as Jobs’ successor and Jobs himself stated that Cook was the best candidate to follow on from himself in the letter he sent regarding his resignation. In his letter Jobs stated that he believed, “Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it.” However, as the news of his resignation hit the general public Apple saw a decrease in their shares showing that Jobs’ resignation cost the company a lot more than just a great mind. After many came to terms with the news of Jobs’ resignation various people started to look back at Steve’s history with the company and how he made Apple the household name and tech giant that it is today. Some reminisce back to when Jobs’ presented the keynote launch of the Apple iPod and several if not thousands of people remark this as the turning point in Apple’s history.
Some cannot envision what Apple may be like without Steve Jobs at the helm but as Jobs will now have a place on the Board there is no fear that the company will drastically stray from the initial vision that Jobs had attended for it. Only time will tell if Tim Cook can step up to the plate as CEO but with Apple and even his predecessor behind him both Cook and Jobs remain optimistic about the future of Apple. Cook in an email to Apple employees was quoted as saying, “I cherish and celebrate Apple’s unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that — it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.”
