Yet Another Bad Week For SONY (Donegal Post Article 01/06/11)

After the big crash of the Playstation Network at the end of April, Sony were only beginning to get their security and network back in order when it was revealed that there has been another attack on Sony through their Sony BMG Greece music site. The attack once again caused loss of user’s data and email addresses and the hackers even shared the acquired data in an online forum. The attack comes as another blow to the Sony Empire and raises questions of how these hackers have been able to breach the network and gain access to all this information. It has been pointed out by many bloggers and tech advisors that the hacks to the network have left the Sony network exposed to further attacks as Sony has become the ultimate target for hackers everywhere. Meet the man who claims he owns 50% of Facebook (Donegal Post Article 25/05/11)

Paul Ceglia, the latest in the line of individuals looking for a pay-out from Facebook claims that he has a written contract which Zuckerberg had signed in 2003 stating Ceglia as 50% owner of “the facebook” project in exchange for funding its development. The allegations brought against Zuckerberg are brought 6 years after the breach of the contract but remain within the statute of limitations in New York as according to DLA Piper who are taking the case against Zuckerberg on behalf of Ceglia. The claims were made early in 2010 but were not taken too seriously by the company with Facebook claiming the accusations as nothing more than farce. Read the rest of this entry

Microsoft Purchases Skype (Donegal Post Article 18/05/11)

Last week we saw great speculation in the IT world surrounding talks between Microsoft and Skype. It was revealed on 10th May that Microsoft purchased Skype for a whopping $8.5 Billion – the largest purchase in the history of the company. With news spreading fast of the new acquisition, many technology buffs questioned why Microsoft would decide to purchase Skype at this time. Many believe it was a very strategic move on behalf of Microsoft to keep Skype away from competitors such as Google. According to Microsoft, the acquisition of Skype will “increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications”, and generate “significant new business and revenue opportunities”. PSN Comes Crashing Down (Donegal Post Article 04/05/11)

From the 17th to the 19th April, the Playstation Network experienced a worldwide outage which resulted in no access to the Network for several days. It was then revealed that the network outage was caused by a security breach which led to long network downtime along with loss of information. Patrick Seybold, the director of communications at Sony publicized the details of this incident in the Playstation Blog. He stated that the security breach resulted in the ability of the unauthorised hacker to gain the information of the 70 million users that subscribe to the network. While it is believed that only the basic profile information was accessed there was still a chance that the various email, phone and even credit card details of the PSN users were also hacked during the attack.
