A Brief History of Windows (Donegal Post Article 20/04/11)

In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen set up the partnership which would come to be the IT giant that is Microsoft. From this partnership, technology and the world itself was set to change for the better. Looking back on the accomplishments of the company it is hard to believe that only 30 years ago MS-DOS was first introduced to the world. In 1981, MS-DOS or Microsoft Disk Operating System was the first operating system of Microsoft which allowed users to effectively use their computer using ‘C:’ to help run various commands.

clip_image001However, it was in 1985 that Microsoft launched their revolutionary operating system ‘Windows 1.0’. Windows 1.0 was the final name decided for their new OS product because it was seen as the best way to describe the boxes or ‘windows’ which with you used the system. Windows 1.0 first introduced to the user applications like Paint, Windows Writer, Notepad and Calculator and even utilised the floppy disk. From 1987 – 1994 Microsoft release Windows 2.0 & 3.0 which offered users new applications like Control Panel, Print Manager, etc. and utilised the development in better graphics for a greater user interface and overall general appearance.
